Observation Point: Texas Women Artists Bear Witness

October 27, 2026 by Russell Fowler

On November 12, 2026, from 5-8pm, Five Points Museum of Contemporary Art will host the opening of a new group exhibition of seven Texas women artists. The show will be anchored by the work of Victoria native Madeline O’Connor and feature the work of six additional artists from Victoria and beyond. They include Helen Altman, Nancy Bandy, Pat Colville, Melissa Miller, Susan Plum, and Liz Ward. These artists are all at high creative points in their careers, and their work is some of the best art that Texas has to offer. The exhibition will be on display through mid-March.

The term “Observation Point” refers to these artists taking on their environment fully. In some cases, like Madeline O’Connor, her work highlights and raises questions about the balance of nature and threatened species. In the case of Nancy Bandy, her “Skyscapes” are sweeping panoramas of clouds and weather, focusing on the primary visual piece of South Texas, the sky, flipping viewers perspective and asking them to look up.

Austin-based Melissa Miller directly confronts the natural conflict in nature, both between predator and prey, and human intervention. Her works are epical, both on a large and small scale. San Antonio’s Liz Ward addresses the spirituality of her environment through collage and painting; each object in her work has meaning, and the overall effect is a moving testament to the beauty in nature’s details.

Susan Plum, from Houston via Mexico and Oregon, has been exploring themes of nature and magical realism for many years, and her work is a meditation on the forms and shapes of her environment. Houstonian Pat Colville’s work is an abstract view of forms of her environment, and calls to mind iconography of our moment in history. And Fort Worth’s Helen Altman explores her environment completely, using both conventional media and found objects as her canvases, with paintings that take multiple forms as the viewer moves closer, from pointillism to abstract realism.

Five Points Museum is honored to present the work of these artists and to provide viewers with a rare opportunity to see the interaction between their work.

The opening reception, Thursday, November 12th, will feature live entertainment and light refreshments from 5-8PM.
